The Gospel reading recalling the encounter between Jesus and the unnamed “Samaritan woman” (John 4:5-42) contains one of the longest dialogues recorded in any of the Gospel texts… but why? Who is this unnamed woman who has been marginalized by the Western tradition, yet proclaimed a saint by the Eastern Church—“an equal to the Apostles”? More importantly, we’ll explore the multi-vocality of this story and how its transformative message can impact our own lives, here and now.
In preparation for our Wednesday Group, you’re invited to read a discussion by New Testament scholar Frances Taylor Gench on the hidden meaning and context of John 4:1-42 found here. Also, read about modern-day Samaritans, here, and find out more about the Well of Jacob in the Israeli-occupied West Bank town of Nablus, here.
