Some scholars, like Mircea Eliade, argue that religion could only have come about through human beings’ encounters with the sacred. That is, religion comes from God. Others, like Luther College emeritus professor Loyal Rue, argue that religion evolved naturally to meet the needs of human beings. As he points out, Rue’s book is not about whether or not God exists.
