Passion for the Bach Passions

  • Holy Trinity Lutheran Church 1218 West Addison Street Chicago United States (map)

FORUM: Sunday, March 8, 12:15 – 1:15 pm (lunch provided; please RSVP to office@htchicago.org by March 1 )

HTLoop member Mark Bangert has studied and conducted Bach cantatas and passions for decades. Come hear some introductory comments  on the Saint John and Saint Matthew passions (how these passions came to be, how to hear them today and how the composer used music to make meaning clear). Whether the passions are new or familiar to you, these insights will deepen your appreciation of these significant spiritual works.

Chicagoans have the opportunity to hear two of Bach’s greatest works (considered among masterpieces of Western music) during March. The Apollo chorus (with several HT members singing) will perform the Saint John Passion on Saturday, March 14, 7:30 pm, at Church of Saint Luke, 1500 W. Belmont (in the Lakeview neighborhood). A group of Holy Trinity members plan to attend. Please buy tickets on your own and let Pr. Mueller know you will be attending. The Saint Matthew Passion will be performed at Grace Lutheran, River Forest, March 28 and 29. Jason Moy of Holy Trinity will be playing continuo for both passions.
