SERMONS

“Help me”
It was about a year ago when I walked into her room at Belmont Village down in Lincoln Park. Her children had gotten a hold of us at church, letting us know things had taken a turn. Dementia had transformed May’s mind in the handful of years leading up to that day and the beloved child of God lying there looked very different than most of us might remember her. In that bed was a woman with sunken cheeks and disheveled hair, wearing a simple nightgown.

Access
Today's gospel is about access. Access to Jesus. Who has it, and who doesn’t have it. Access is a currency we deal in all the time, consciously or unconsciously. Consciously is when we pay extra at an Airbnb to get beach access. Unconscious examples include things like a zip code, an education level, or a network of friends. These types of things give us access to all sorts of things we take for granted: libraries, parks, social stability, and information.

Faithful Action
Last night for a Valentine’s Day date, Pierrette and I did what we often do—we went out to hear live music. Last night’s show was nearby—at the Jazz Showcase in the old Dearborn Station. The Alexander McLean Project, a collaboration of vocalist Dee Alexander and band leader, composer, and guitarist John McLean, was just what we wanted for a delightful evening. They played old standards like My Funny Valentine (of course) and new tunes they are working on for their next record. Their gesture to the larger political winds were subdued but not subtle—they signaled in no uncertain terms that the so-called “Love Day” shouldn’t be just one day in mid-February but every day. Ms. Alexander couldn’t have said it better had she been in a pulpit.

God: The Original They/Them
We are created in the image of God, and God is, well…they are relational. They are always in a co-equal relationship with each other, they are in a constant love relationship with us. They love us beyond measure. They love us unconditionally. They have named us and claimed us in baptism as their very own beloved child and they send us out from this place ready to be in relationship with their creation to the end of the age.

Beyond Belief
Certainly, God treasures and loves us. Christ is risen, indeed. This is the good news that even in doubt and despair, new life springs forth. This is the faith into which we are baptized. This is the hope gives meaning and purpose to our days.

Where are you from?
Holy God, holy and beautiful,
you are despised, rejected,
scorned, you hold us fast,
and we behold your beauty.
Holy God, holy and living one,
you show your love by dying for your friends,
and we behold you living.

Take Off Your Shoes
And then: have your shoes on, ready to walk to liberation, as the Israelites were told to do as they awaited their deliverance from slavery. For freedom is coming. New life is coming. Easter is coming!

Are You Wooed?
Jesus woos her. But more than that: Jesus woos Samaritans. The gift of God is now for everyone. In that time: women, Samaritans, Gentiles, outcasts. Today? Minorities. People of other faiths or no faith. Those on the margins. Those with strange, questionable backgrounds.

Tricks, Treats, and Trees
Zaccheaus decorated a tree with himself. His neighbors saw the chief tax collector.
Jesus, passing through, saw Zacchaeus.

Being the Least Bit Thankful
We can be free, spontaneous, unpredictable, improbable, and content in gratitude, not because it is a requirement, but because it reflects the confidence we possess when we cry out “Have mercy!”

You are God's delight
What if we each knew and believed and trusted that God loved us (and all of our neighbors even the hard to love ones) so very much that it made God laugh with delight to see us, to hold us, to squeeze us tight? I can’t help but think that such a thing would change the world.

And yet, today is holy to the Lord
Most importantly, God is present in the midst of it all. Present in the sorrow, with them in the lament, active in their rejoicing and celebration. God’s word–living and active–holds all of this, allows all of this. And when the time is right God transforms the entire encounter into an experience of joy.

Esablishing Residency
A barn harbors heaven, and straw like gold shines, indeed. But your dwelling is also holy. Your house, your condo, your apartment. Your body shines as well. And all the diverse bodies on this body we call mother earth. The trees and the stars shine. All things bright and beautiful.

Something is Stirring
“My words will not pass away” This is our zipline folks. This is when we jump off the ledge of the world we know and are carried off, being held by this enduring factor. The word made flesh that lives within us and sustains us through our most apocalyptic moments and stirs within us holy anticipation of what is to come: The kindom of heaven.

You don't have to worry about where you sit.
What James and John fail to understand is that service in the kin-dom of God is not a second class means to a first class end. Service is the end. Service is abundance. Service is power. Service is glory.

From Me to We
Who are we as a people, when our faith is tested? Who are we when it is tiring to believe? Who are we when we stand on stolen land and at the very same time try to live as a people that are commanded to care for our neighbor as ourselves?
