Called to Create with Seminarian Reed Fowler

After worship on May 3, Seminarian Reed Fowler will be hosting a forum connected to their ministry project, exploring the connection between creative/arts practice, and spirituality. Reed strongly believes that since we are all made in the image of a Creative God, we are created to create. And yet there can be fear, hesitation, self-doubt when asked if we claim a creative identity, if you aren't working as an artist, or are above a certain age, even as we engage in generative creative practices throughout our lives. The creativity folks have been showing in the midst of this pandemic has been so beautiful- cooking with emptier-than-usual pantries, trying new ritual practices, putting construction paper hearts in outward-facing windows, perhaps picking up a hobby long put down, or something you've always wanted to try.

In the first part of the forum, we'll talk about the connections between arts practice and faith, and open up the discussion to ask: "has creativity changed for you in the present moment?"

In the second part of the forum, please have available something to make marks, and something to mark on. That might look like paper and a pen, a newspaper and markers, index cards and crayons. Reed will have a few guiding prompts, related to their larger project of creating a tablecloth that can be used both on the altar and at fellowship hour at HTLoop.

An update from Reed on the tablecloth: that project will still happen, albeit in a slightly different form once we're meeting in person again. I am grieving the fact that there is a good chance I will be on internship at that time, but will be leaving the materials and the instructions for this project to still exist. I have experienced this community to be one that takes the invitation to fellowship and welcome incredibly seriously, and with great joy. This tablecloth will be an object born of that fellowship! It has been such a joy to serve with y'all over this last year, and the grace and care shown to each other in the midst of this uncertainty is a testament to the bonds of this community.
